Mobility Danes of New England: A New Name for a Clearer Mission

After thoughtful reflection and meaningful discussion, the Board of Directors is pleased to share an important update: our organization is changing its name to Mobility Danes of New England.
This change is more than a new name. It is a clearer expression of who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Our mission has always centered on carefully breeding, raising, training, and matching Great Danes with individuals whose lives are transformed through increased mobility and independence. Mobility Danes of New England reflects that purpose—and the communities we serve—directly.
As our work has grown, we recognized the importance of a name that immediately communicates our focus on mobility assistance and the remarkable partnership between our dogs and their recipients. This new name honors the dedication behind every match we make, including the commitment of our breeders and trainers, host families, volunteers, and generous donors. It also helps the public better understand the life-changing impact of our programs.
While our name is evolving, our heart, values, and commitment remain unchanged. We will continue to uphold the highest standards of care, training, and placement, always guided by compassion, integrity, and respect for both our dogs and the individuals they serve.

Get to Know Us
Formerly known as Service Dog Project, Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. has bred, raised, and donated more than 180 certified Great Dane service dogs—completely free of charge—to individuals living with balance and mobility challenges. Our work begins with a specialized breeding program designed to support long-term soundness and stability. All potential breeding dogs undergo extensive OFA screening before they are considered for our program, helping ensure each generation is built for the physical demands of mobility and balance work. Every Great Dane in our program is born and raised at our facility, where dedicated staff and volunteers provide round-the-clock care and close supervision during the critical first month of life. From the very beginning, each dog is supported with the structure, socialization, and attention that lay the foundation for a successful working partnership. Our comprehensive training program spans approximately 1.5 years, ensuring every dog develops essential mobility-support skills before being thoughtfully matched with a recipient. After placement, training and support continue to help the team adapt to the individual’s needs, routines, and lifestyle. As specialized balance dogs, our Great Danes are trained to provide steady harness support, adjust pace to match their handler’s gait, and perform controlled halts and braces to help a handler regain footing—or safely rise after a fall.

Mobility Danes of New England (MDNE) is a Massachusetts-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We raise, train, and donate fully trained service dogs—at no cost—to individuals with mobility and balance challenges, and we also place service dogs with Veterans who need support with PTSD, anxiety, and related conditions.
Because every dog is provided 100% free of charge, we rely on community support to sustain the program. One of the most meaningful ways to help is by becoming a host family: welcoming a young dog into your home while our professional trainers guide the dog’s development into the steady, life-changing service partner they are meant to be.
